2006 RIDLER AWARD WINNER TO BE DISPLAYED AT PPG BOOTH AT SEMA

PPG Finishes used on “Iowa Radster”
STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – October 24, 2006
The “Iowa Radster”, a one-of-a-kind, hand-built custom roadster and winner of the prestigious Rider Award, will be on display at the PPG booth at SEMA, #22891. The culmination of a 2½-year collaborative effort, The “Radster” captured the most coveted trophy in the world of custom cars at the Detroit Autorama in March.
Commissioned by owners Kevin and Karen Alstott of Fort Dodge, Iowa, the meticulously beautiful gold and burgundy vehicle was built by Roger Burman and his team at Lakeside Rods & Rides of Rockwell City, Iowa. The spectacular two-tone paint job was executed by Dean Fowler of Lakeside Rods & Rides, using PPG Automotive finishes. The Alstotts began the process by selecting a burgundy and gold from Mercedes-Benz ’05 colors, PPG paint codes 62708 and 908442. Fowler then tweaked the formula to achieve the desired uniqueness. 2K Chromatic Sealer from the Global Refinish System, Deltron DBC basecoat, and Concept DCU 2020 clear from PPG were used to complete the dazzling finish.
“We looked long and hard for a color combination that would give it a timeless look,” explains Alstott.
“We really wanted to be different, which is very difficult to achieve.”
According to Randy Schultz, PPG Territory Manager, Lakeside Rods & Rides has been a longtime user of PPG paint, going back to 1988 when Burman first opened his shop and called on his PPG distributor, Arnold Motors Supply of Fort Dodge to service his needs.
At first glance, the Radster appears to be a customized ’35 Ford roadster. However, the body was hand-formed from sheet metal by Marcel’s Custom Metal, one of the nation’s top coachbuilders, and the chromed Dart 408-cubic-inch block engine was modified by Woody’s Automotive, of Omaha, Nebraska. To win the Ridler, the Iowa Radster competed against 30 contenders at the 2006 Autorama, selected from over 20,000 applications that are submitted during the year at Championship Auto Show events. Entries are judged by a team of judges from the International Show Car Association (ISCA), based on creativity, engineering, and workmanship.

Adobe colored bucket seats and leather trim. The teardrop theme was carried throughout including the one-off clutch and brake pedals with Corian inserts, gauge cluster, shift knob and floor treatment.
BODY: Marcel’s Custom Metal,
Especially distinctive are the frenched prismatic taillights and the one-off, stainless teardrop grille build by Grille Art. The sleek, flowing fenders were an add-on to Burman’s original design.
FRAME: S.A.C. Custom Rails
For the undercarriage, a one-off X-member tubular frame features Indy-style independent suspension front and rear. Every component was painted, plated or powder-coated to create an immaculate underneath view.
ENGINE: Woody’s Automotive, Omaha, Nebraska
A Dart 408-cubic-inch block engine, modified and delivering an estimated 550 horsepower. The engine is matched to a Tremec 6-speed manual gearbox. Engine block heads and transmission were polished and detailed for a flawless appearance.
